Welcome To Chalet Espen

We are Simon and Catriona, your hosts at Chalet Espen. Welcome to our Spring, Summer and Autumn website.

Chalet Espen is a historic and traditional Swiss chalet located in Engelberg, in the heart of Switzerland. We welcome guests to Chalet Espen throughout the year.

Chalet Espen’s accommodation is unique in Engelberg – a blend of luxury guest house and small boutique hotel, in a historic and traditional Swiss chalet. We aim to offer a high standard of service and accommodation, but at a reasonable price.

Engelberg is one of the original Swiss mountain resorts, with a spectacular setting, excellent transport links and superb facilities for visitors. From the beginning of Spring (in early May) to late Autumn (in November), there are many outdoor activities to enjoy in Engelberg, including hiking and walking on 360 kilometres of marked trails, cycling and mountain biking, climbing, golf and swimming. The beautiful lake-side city of Luzern is also close by, offering many other attractions and activities to enjoy.

At this time of the year we provide mainly bed and breakfast accommodation for up to 18 guests, although half board accommodation may also be arranged on request. You can arrive at Chalet Espen on any day of the week, and stay for as long as you like (although we do have a minimum stay of 3 nights).

To experience just some of what Engelberg has to offer, we would encourage guests visiting in the Spring, Summer and Autumn seasons to stay for at least a week, but to fully appreciate the surrounding area and perhaps visit some of Switzerland’s many other attractions on easy day trips from Engelberg, a holiday of two weeks is ideal.

Chalet Espen itself was built in about 1750 and is one of the oldest surviving buildings in Engelberg. The chalet was first a farmhouse and then in the 1800s it became a coaching inn, providing food and shelter for weary travellers arriving on foot or by horse and carriage from the valley below - we still have the stones outside to which visitors tied their horses.

Chalet Espen is in a beautiful location, opposite the lake at the southern entrance to the resort. There are wonderful mountain views from virtually every room in the house.

We are an 8 minute walk from the centre of the resort, and only 5 minutes walk along a footpath from the main Titlis cable car station, from which you can access many of the alpine activities available in Engelberg.
